Using Tech to Stay Connected.

Time flies. There is no way around it. I have discovered and decided that there is no cure for how fast time passes. The only thing we can do is figure out how to stay connected to what is important, make the time we spend away from people we love as efficient as possible so we can in turn spend more time with our loved ones. Lately I have been rattled by news of rather unexpected deaths of friends and people I grew up with. I am by no means considering myself old but I am no longer young,…

At the End of the Day - What Do We Really Want Our Kids to Remember?

I haven't posted in awhile, but am in a reflecting kind of mood AND hubby's glued to the football game, so here goes...

Several things lately have made me think, reflect...  Maybe it's my age, maybe it's that my oldest is a Senior, or maybe it's just God's way of making me slow down and "smell the roses" so to speak.

My daughter, now 18, has struggled with some pretty serious learning disabilities in her life.  I have yet to tell our story (book in the works) but after…

Hey moms out there, I'm a 17 year old senior. In order for me to graduate i have to have a senior portfolio, which includes me having to do a documentary on a social issue. the social issue i chose is "television effecting a child's behavior". so i was wondering if you could record yourselves talking about how this has effected your childs life or email me writing about this issue, so i can include in my documentary. @wilson9615@gmail.com

We Can Do Better Than TV

At a recent social gathering a group of us asked a friend how her sister, a first time mom, was managing her twin toddlers—two bright-eyed and beautiful 12 month old girls whose photos regularly lit up our Facebook feeds. “She’s doing fabulous,” our friend told us excitedly, “and the girls are just thriving!” We were happy to hear this and leaned in to hear more, after all there is a sort of curiosity as to how mothers who have been doubly blessed deal with their two, where most of us have…

Spooky Ideas for Halloween

It's been a while since I last posted, wow what a crazy fast summer! Between work and vacation, back to school and life I haven't had as much time to write as I'd like. But guess what!? Halloween is right around the corner!! How exciting :)

I figured I'd share some of my plans and ideas for Halloween with everyone and hope to see you share some of yours.

My kids love Halloween a lot more than I do, I am more of a Christmas kinda gal myself. But every year they come up with…

Clutching a tissue in his hand...

I came to pick you up from school today and found you huddled in a corner, red-eyed, with a ragged tissue between your little fingers. My joy at seeing you after a day apart evaporated into…

How I Taught My Kids About Environmental Responsibility by Redecorating My Living Room

Let’s get one thing straight here. I am by no means a “PETA Parent.” I eat meat. I wear leather. I drive a Ford Ranger because a Prius stinks at hauling antique vanities. However, I do believe that people should take some responsibility for their impact on the environment.  That’s why my family actively recycles, grows our own vegetables and composts our trash.  We only get one earth, after all.

This is value my husband and I have been actively trying to instill in our children. We…

Camping in Tents

Sometimes you just have to get out. Leave everyday life with its small and larger issues behind and go somewhere for some fresh air. You have few options, book your holiday or get hotel room and  enjoy the all-inclusive service of a large resort. But what about  a holidayin the middle of the…

The Power of Sports Day...

Today is sports day at my son's Primary School. His very first athletics carnival. Hmmm, mixed feelings about it. How's it going to go?

The air has been abuzz with excitement since he came home from school yesterday, telling us that he had to have an enormous breakfast before his race, because he'd need the energy for his run. When…

Teaching children to celebrate differences...

My little boy was a very well-spoken toddler, and I really enjoyed listening to his observations of the world from his small and very young perspective.

That feeling of pride and joy fell down a very deep hole one day, however, when he said very loudly, "Look at that fat lady!" right next to the person in…

A Book of Bullies

My name is Katherine Stanley, and I am 17 years old. I have written a book called A Book of Bullies, and it will be published soon by Grateful Steps Publishing. Unfortunately, bullying is something I know a lot about. I was born with a medical condition that makes me a bit different from most kids my age, and I was bullied and made fun of a lot in school. Bullying is…

4 Tips for Starting Your Own Business as a Parent

It’s not uncommon for parents to decide that they’re better suited to a home office than a cubicle somewhere downtown. Working from home gives you a chance to spend more time with your kids while earning a stable living at the same time.  It also happens to be the perfect excuse to become an entrepreneur and start the business you’ve always dreamed of owning.

However, being an entrepreneur isn’t all board meetings and Christmas bonuses. There’s a lot of work involved in setting up a…

What's the Point of Pointing?

Pointing is one of the most important pre-verbal gestures and a crucial communication milestones that emerges within the first year of life.

Studies show that a child’s use of gesture and pointing at 14 months is the best predictor of later vocabulary size.

That’s right... a larger vocabulary for children who use pointing to…

What to do About a Lisp

We all know someone who has a lisp, right?

There are actually four different types of lisps (see below), but the most common is an interdental lisp, when the tongue pushes through the front teeth and the /s/ sound is pronounced like a /th/. “See”…

End Of The School Year: For Teachers, It's Bittersweet

As the dismissal bell looms, I stand at the front of my wiggly students for the last time.

"Today our classroom door isn't just a regular door," I tell them.

"It isn't?" one of my students asks.

"No. Today, on our last day of fourth grade, that door has a magic…

A Letter to My Baby - How I Feel Being a New Mom

The other day I was heading out for a walk with the baby and as I tried to get on her jacket, I had one arm above her head and the other tangled on the side – she shot me a puzzling look as if to say, “Really Mom, are you new at this?” At that moment I laughed and said to her, “You may have realized I’m new at this job, but just know, I will always love you to the moon and back.” As we headed for the door, I decided that I would write her a letter to explain exactly how I was feeling…

Daniel’s Story: Pediatric Ophthalmology and Vision Therapy for Kids

Daniel was an active four-year-old boy in a mid-sized Texas town when his parents and pre-school teacher noticed what appeared to be the early signs of amblyopia (also known as lazy eye).

Lazy eye can lead to compromised vision and even legal blindness if left untreated. His parents and teacher knew he had to see a doctor—quickly. So his parents scheduled an appointment for a comprehensive eye examination.          …
